The standard off the rack clubs consist of 1-3-5 Woods and 3-PW irons.
The best innovations in custom club making start where the rack leaves
off. Many players have a difficult time hitting long irons well.
2,3, and 4 Irons can be difficult to hit consistently because of their longer length
combined with relatively little loft.
THE FACTS
You are only allowed 14 clubs in your bag so make the most of it.
4,6,7, and 9 Woods are for all golfers (Even PGA Tour Pros)
Use a 4Wood instead of a 1 Iron
Use a 6Wood instead of a 2 Iron
Use a 7Wood instead of a 3 Iron
Use a 9Wood instead of a 4 Iron
A 7Wood and a 3 Iron will go about the same distance but with very
different trajectory. The 3 Iron will most likely have a fair amount
of roll at the end where a 7Wood will fly higher and land softer with less
roll. This means the 3 Iron will roll into the bunker guarding the
front of the green and the 7Wood will fly over it.
Combination wood/iron "rescue" clubs offer the look of an iron
with the forgiveness of a fairway wood. These clubs are also a good
alternative to long irons.
