The standard off the rack clubs consist of a Pitching wedge and maybe a sand wedge.  The best innovations in scoring clubs are found in the vast variety of wedges available.  A variety of lofts and sole angles (bounce) enables the custom club make to fit you with the proper scoring clubs to fit your game and the type of course you play.

The short game teacher of the pros is Mr. Dave Pelz www.pelzgolf.com   Mr. Pelz's research shows that most players would benefit from dropping a few of their long irons and replacing them with a couple of "scoring clubs".  In his short game book Mr. Pelz talks about how simple it is to use a 4-wedge setup with 3 different swing lengths to pick up strokes around the greens.  There are more shots lost to par between the green and 100 yards of the green than any other place on the course.  We refer to this setup as a 4x3 wedge setup for clubs.   If you have never heard of Dave Pelz  we urge you to check out his website and find out who Dave Pelz is and why many PGA Tour Professionals seek him out.  The "Dave Pelz Short Game Bible"  will explain all about the 3x3 and 4x3 wedge systems.

THE FACTS

bulletIn the 1970's the average loft "gap" between the pitching wedge (PW) and the sand wedge (SW) was 4°, a 52° PW was considered  to be standard as was a 56° SW.  Today club manufacturers may have a 46° PW and a 55° SW, (a 9°Gap).  Note that in 1970 a 46° club was somewhere between an 8 iron (44°) and a 9 iron (48°).
bulletMost all the clubs from the 3 Iron to the 9 Iron have about a 4° gap between clubs.  This 4° gap of the allows a player to hit shots of different trajectory and distance with what is basically the same swing.
bulletThe 9° gap between PW & SW in modern clubs makes it harder to hit "scoring shots (inside 80 yards)".
bulletThe "third gap) wedge" is designed to fill the 9° gap in the modern set of irons.
bulletGap wedges bring back the 4° difference between clubs and allow you to use your wedges with the same swing to create higher flying & softer landing shots from inside 80 yards.
bulletGap wedges come in a wide variety of bounce angles that are designed for different playing conditions
bulletThe "fourth (lob) wedge" (60° or 64°) is designed to have more loft than the sand wedge but usually has a bounce angle that is more suited to play from the rough.  This club was designed for the modern course where the penalty for missing the green can be severe and require a very high  "lob" that hits the green and stops quickly.
bulletIF YOU STRUGGLE FROM INSIDE 80 YARDS MAYBE YOU WOULD GET BACK A FEW STROKES BY ADDING ONE OF THESE "SCORING CLUBS" TO YOUR BAG.
